Bruce: Just what do you consider a computer. I.e the motherboard, HDvideo cards or a combination of all of them, or better yet give me an example. Microsoft has never made it clear exactly what a new computer is, so neither Bruce nor I can definitively answer that question. For a long time, many people felt that replacing the motherboard made it a different computer. However, Microsoft has clarified that. See or which states 'If you acquired Windows Vista pre-installed on a computer from a major manufacturer (sometimes referred to as an Original Equipment Manufacturer or OEM), Windows Vista will require re-activation if you replace the motherboard with a motherboard not provided by the OEM.' So clearly, if you can reactivate it, it's legal to use it.
Although that page is specifically about Vista, it's reasonable to assume that the same thing applies to Windows 7. I have no intention of selling or giving my computer to anyone, but I can't help it if something dies on it. Based upon what you've stated I'll just buy another HD from the local builder and have him put window 7 on it. The HD should be around until MS comes out with its next OS.

I assume this would allow me to change motherboards, Video cards etc. To get around what you've listed as a problem. I base this on the quote you gave me when you said 'Be aware, however, that the primary reason an OEM license is so much cheaper than a retail license is that it's non-transferable. An OEM version must normally be sold with a piece of hardware (normally a motherboard or hard drive, if not an entire PC) and is permanently bound to the first PC on which it's installed.
An OEM license, once installed, is not legally transferable to another computer under any circumstances.' Maybe it's time for me to start looking into Linux. - Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) since 2003 Ken Blake.
Oem Version Windows
Windows update installed SP2 overnight last night, on logging into the machine this morning windows was requesting reactivation. The automatic activation won't work, it refuses to accept the product key on the Vista disk packaging and won't give me any number sequences to input over the phone. The machine Vista was installed on is a self-built machine that I purchased an OEM version of Vista to install on. Its worked perfectly being activated and validated since being built 18 months ago, now with the installing of SP2 its just not working.
